2008-11-30 -- 7:31 pm Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament ? Final Day Report ANNAPOLIS , MD (Sunday, November 30, 2008) – The #8 West Chester University Golden Rams led by #10 Robert Bushman’s hat trick clinched second place in the Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament. With the 6 to 2 defeat, the Navy Hockey team now has an overall record of 9-14-2. West Chester’s Robert Bushman netted the only goals of the first and second periods with a power play goal in the first and an even strength goal in the second. In the third period, West Chester scored two goals within 27 seconds to chase Navy netminder Jameson Marshall from the game. Navy’s Jon Westerman and Charlie Daniel would score to bring Navy within 2, but West Chester would score the final two goals to punctuate their win. Goaltender Jameson Marshall made 28 saves before yielding to Jeremey Estevez, who made 12 saves. Navy was outshot by West Chester, 45 to 46. The Midshipmen are back in action on Wednesday for the final game of 2008 as they host Georgetown University at 7:30PM. In the earlier game, the #7 Iowa State University Cyclones led by #23 Mike Murtaugh completed their sweep of the tournament by beating Washington & Jefferson by a score of 7 to 2. 2008-11-30 -- 1:24 am Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament - Day 2 Report ANNAPOLIS , MD (Saturday, November 29, 2008) – The #7 Iowa State University Cyclones netted two short handed goals on their way to a 5 to 2 victory over the Navy Hockey team (9-13-2) during the second day of the Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament. Iowa State scored four unanswered goals until Navy’s Sam Carlson recorded a third period power play goal. In the final two minutes of the third, Iowa State and Navy traded goals to finish out the scoring. Goaltender Jeremey Estevez made 31 saves, as Navy was outshot 36 to 33. With their win tonight, Iowa State has won the Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament because they own the tie breaker against both West Chester and Navy. The Midshipmen are back in action tomorrow as they host #8 West Chester at 3:30PM. In the earlier game, #8 West Chester led by #8 Jim Gehring and #32 Pat Johnson defeated Washington & Jefferson by a score of 8 to 5. 2008-11-28 -- 11:28 pm Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament - Day 1 Report ANNAPOLIS , MD (Friday, November 28, 2008) – The Navy Hockey team (9-12-2) led by Senior Captain John Patrick Culliton beat the visiting Washington and Jefferson College Presidents during the first day of the Thanksgiving Holiday Invitational Tournament by a score of 5 to 4. Navy’s Matt Keller opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period. Eric Bowen and Patrick Heitman netted goals to give Navy a quick three goal lead in the second period. However, the Presidents came storming back to tie the game with three goals to close out the second period. In the third period, John Patrick Culliton scored a short handed goal and the game winning power play goal. Freshman goaltender Jameson Marshall recorded 31 saves, as Navy outshot the Presidents 38 to 35. The Midshipmen are back in action tomorrow as they host #7 Iowa State at 7:30PM on Saturday and then #8 West Chester at 3:30PM on Sunday. In the earlier game, #7 Iowa State was led by #18 Bill Adolph on their way to a 7 to 1 victory over #8 West Chester. The Midshipmen are back in action next weekend as they host the Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 2008-11-22 -- 10:35 am Navy Defeats Temple!!! ANNAPOLIS , MD (Friday, November 21, 2008) – The Navy Hockey team (7-11-2) beat the visiting Temple University Owls by a score of 6-1. Freshman goaltender Jameson Marshall made several spectacular saves while earning the victory. The Midshipmen are back in action as they welcome the Pitt Panthers on Saturday and Sunday. 2008-11-16 -- 12:01 am #3 Penn State Blanks Navy ANNAPOLIS , MD (Saturday, November 15, 2008) – The Navy Hockey team (6-11-2, 0-7-1 ESCHL) allowed the visiting #3 Penn State Nittany Lion Icers (12-2-0, 7-1-0 ESCHL) to score on four of their seven power plays and were unable to generate any offense on their four power plays. The result was a 5 – 0 victory for Penn State. This was the second time that Navy has been shutout during the 2008-09 season. Navy Goaltender Jameson Marshall recorded 24 saves, as Navy was outshot 29 to 26. The Midshipmen are back in action with a three game set at home next weekend. On Friday they take on the visiting Temple Owls and they welcome the Pitt Panthers on Saturday and Sunday. 2008-11-14 -- 11:24 pm #3 Penn State Sinks Navy ANNAPOLIS , MD (Friday, November 14, 2008) – The Navy Hockey team (6-10-2, 0-6-1 ESCHL) spotted the visiting #3 Penn State Nittany Lion Icers (11-2-0, 6-1-0 ESCHL) four first period goals and were never able to recover as they lost 7-2. Navy got a power play goal in the second period from Charlie Daniel and an even strength tally by Tom Fick in the third. Navy Goaltender Jeremey Estevez recorded 5 saves in the first period before being relieved by Jameson Marshall, who recorded 27 saves the rest of the game. Even though it was a loss there were two notable achievements tonight: - Matt Swezey’s assist on Charlie Daniel’s power play goal was his 100th point in his Navy Hockey career. For his career, he has 47 goals and 53 assists. - NASA Astronaut Stephen Bowen (Captain, USN) ’86 blasted into the night sky at 7:55 PM EST aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on their way to the international space station. Navy Hockey can now say that they have been to space as he was an amazing goaltender for the Navy Hockey team from 1982-86. He is traveling with several Navy Hockey mementos. 2008-11-13 -- 5:04 pm Navy Faces #3 Penn State The Navy Hockey team (6-9-2, 0-5-1 ESCHL) will be hosting the #3 Penn State Nittany Lion Icers (10-2-0, 5-1-0 ESCHL) with a pair of games this weekend at the McMullen Hockey Arena on Friday and Saturday night. Penn State prevailed in the two previous contests at Penn State by scores of 7-1 and 6-1 on October 24th and 25th, respectively. The Midshipmen are in the throes of a seven-game skid dating back to October 18th. Their last loss was a heart-breaking 5-4 overtime loss to #12 Michigan-Dearborn. Navy held a two-goal lead midway through the third, but failed to hold on as the Wolves scored two power play goals, the second of which came with just 35 seconds remaining, to force overtime. Last weekend, the Icers split with Drexel. Drexel won at Penn State on Friday night by a score of 3-2 even though they were outshot 66 to 20. Penn State then won at Drexel by a score of 4-1 on Saturday. By: Jim
2008-11-08 -- 5:27 pm Navy Falls to #12 UMD Again ANNAPOLIS , MD (Saturday, November 8, 2008) – Navy was able to shutdown #12 University of Michigan – Dearborn’s two freshmen sensations but still fell in overtime by a score of 5 to 4. Navy opened the game on Mitch Pulver power play goal just over four minutes into the game. Navy’s Alex Wallis closed out the scoring in the first period with an even strength goal. In the second period, Michael Orzetti netted a power play goal which was quickly answered by UMD a half minute later. The period ended with Navy holding a 3-1 lead. In the third period Navy and UMD traded goals within fifteen seconds and then UMD scored three unanswered goals including the game winner in overtime. Junior netminder Jeremey Estevez made 38 saves, as the Wolves outshot the Mids, 38-43. Referee Sal Mazzola whistled nine minor penalties against Navy and five against UMD. The Midshipmen (now 6-9-2 overall) are back in action tomorrow next weekend at home against #3 Penn State. By: Jim
2008-11-07 -- 11:55 pm #12 UMD Shows Their Offensive Might ANNAPOLIS , MD (Friday, November 7, 2008) – The Navy faithful witnessed the offensive explosion that is #12 University of Michigan – Dearborn’s two freshmen sensations. Number 23 James Telfer (21 Goals - 29 Assists - 50 Points in 14 games) tied with teammate #12 Mike Macari (25-22-47 in 13) to lead all scorers with 7 points each. Navy opened the game on a Matt Swezey goal about six minutes into the game, but the UMD Wolves responded with two power play goals within two and a half minutes of each other. Navy’s Mitch Pulver closed out the scoring in the first period with a power play goal of his own. During the second period, Navy raced out to a 5-2 lead on goals by John Patrick Culliton, Charlie Daniel and Mitch Pulver. However, the wheels came off as UMD netted eight consecutive goals during the second and third periods. During this stretch, UMD scored four goals in only two minutes. Freshman Jameson Marshall recorded 14 saves before yielding to Jeremey Estevez, who made 10 saves. The Mids outshot the Wolvers, 42-34. Referee Scott Pomento whistled ten penalties against Navy and twelve against UMD. The Midshipmen (now 6-9-1 overall) are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM against UMD. By: Jim
2008-11-05 -- 5:29 pm Navy Prepares for #12 Michigan-Dearborn Navy Hockey’s opponent this weekend is national powerhouse University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Wolves are currently ranked #12 in the 2008-2009 ACHA Men's Division 1 Ranking. They have appeared in the ACHA National Tournament each year since the ACHA was founded (16 times). They are led offensively by two freshmen sensations in #23 James Telfer (16 Goals - 27 Assists - 43 Points in 13 games) and #12 Michael Macari (22-18-40 in 12). James Telfer hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan and he played for the Bridgewater Bandits of the EJHL before coming to Michigan-Dearborn. Michael Macari, the Dearborn Heights, Michigan native, played for the Marquette Rangers of the NAHL. Friday’s game will be a 7:30 PM at the McMullen Ice Arena followed by a 2 PM afternoon game on Saturday. By: Jim
2008-11-02 -- 1:57 am Midshipmen Drop Second Game at Drexel ANNAPOLIS, MD (Saturday, November 1, 2008) – Navy’s ice hockey team played a close game at Drexel but just could not pull out a victory as they lost to the Drexel University Dragons (7-4-0) 6 – 4. Drexel opened the game on a Tom Buklarewicz goal but Navy’s Jonathon Westerman answered about six minutes later to tie the game. During the second period, Sam Carlson would score a power play goal to give Navy their first lead of the game. Drexel responded seven minutes later but Michael Orzetti’s power play goal regained Navy’s one goal lead. Entering the third period Navy was leading 3 to 2, but Drexel’s Andrew Lawrie quickly tied the game on a 5 on 3 power play goal. Lawrie would give Drexel the lead on an even strength goal just four minutes later. Jon Westerman’s second goal of the game tied the game at 4. With just over five minutes left in the game Drexel’s Buklarewicz scored the game winner. Drexel closed out the scoring with an empty netter. Junior Jeremey Estevez recorded 32 saves, as the Mids were outshot by the Dragons, 49-38. The Midshipmen (now 6-8-1 overall and 0-3-1 in ESCHL) host #12 Michigan-Dearborn next weekend. By: Jim
2008-10-31 -- 10:55 pm Midshipmen Drop Crucial ESCHL Game to Drexel ANNAPOLIS, MD (Friday, October 31, 2008) – Navy’s ice hockey team allowed four unanswered goals to the visiting Drexel University Dragons (6-4-0) in a span of 17 minutes on their way to a 5 – 3 loss. Navy opened the game on a Chandler Brewer goal just over two minutes into the game, but Drexel would score the next four goals. Navy answered with goals by Kevin Frederick and Michael Orzetti in the second period. Entering the third period Navy was down 4 to 3, but Drexel’s Alex Cohen scored his second goal of the game to seal the victory for Drexel. Freshman Jameson Marshall recorded 20 saves, as the Mids outshot the Dragons, 41-25. Referee Doug Wood whistled five penalties against Navy and four against Drexel. The Midshipmen (now 6-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in ESCHL) travel to Drexel tomorrow night to complete the home-and-home series. Unfortunately, there will not be a Navy broadcast of this game on TEAMLINE due to phone issues at Drexel’s Class of ’23 Arena on the campus of UPENN. By: Jim
2008-10-26 -- 1:20 pm Navy Drops Both Games at #3 Penn State STATE COLLEGE, PA (Saturday, October 25, 2008) – The Naval Academy Hockey team suffered a 6 to 1 loss to the #3 ranked Penn State Nittany Lion Icers (6-1-0) in a Saturday afternoon affair. Penn State started the scoring with a goal on their very first shot just nineteen seconds into the first period. Navy’s Patrick Heitman responded with a power play goal eight minutes later but the rest of the game would all be all Icers, as they would score two goals in each period. Junior Goaltender Jeremey Estevez recorded 32 saves. The Midshipmen (now 6-6-1 overall) are back in action on Friday night at home against Drexel. 2008-10-25 -- 12:36 am Navy Falls to #3 Penn State STATE COLLEGE, PA (Friday, October 24, 2008) – The Naval Academy Hockey team suffered a 7 to 1 loss to the #3 ranked Penn State Nittany Lion Icers (5-1-0) in a late night affair. Navy held Penn State to one goal in a tightly played exciting first period. However, the Icers came out blazing in the second and scored four unanswered even strength goals to take a 5 goal lead into the locker room at the end of the second period. Navy’s Alex Wallis netted the first goal in the third period but Penn State responded with a short handed goal and a power play goal. Junior Goaltender Eric Anderson recorded 36 saves in 40 minutes of work and Freshman Jameson Marshall recorded 14 saves in the final 20 minutes. The Midshipmen (now 6-5-1 overall) are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 PM against Penn State. By: Jim
2008-10-18 -- 11:38 pm Navy Falls to Lehigh ANNAPOLIS, MD (Saturday, October 18, 2008) – Lehigh Center Rob Rosenhaus led the visiting Mountain Hawks to a 6 to 4 win over Navy. The Wyckoff, New Jersey native had four goals and assisted on another. Junior Defenseman Patrick Heitman started the scoring in the game when he blasted a power play goal, but Lehigh’s Rosenhaus responded less than a minute later to tie the game. In the second period, Rosenhaus scored his second of the game, but Navy’s Charlie Daniel netted a power play goal two minutes later to tie the game again. The next three goals cam from Lehigh sticks, and Navy would not be able to recover as they trailed 5 to 2 at the end of the second. Navy seemed to come to life in the third, but it would be too little too late. Navy’s Jeff Martin scored a power play goal and Charlie Daniel scored a beautiful short handed goal. Junior goaltender Jeremey Estevez recorded 24 saves on 30 Lehigh shots.The Midshipmen (now 6-4-1 overall) travel to #3 Penn State next weekend for a pair of games. By: Jim
2008-10-17 -- 11:19 pm Navy Wins OT Thriller!! ANNAPOLIS, MD (Friday, October 17, 2008) – Junior Defenseman Chandler Brewer netted the game winner in a thrilling overtime game that sent the Navy faithful home happy. The first period featured plenty of back-and-forth action but neither team was able to dent the twine. In the second period, Navy Senior John Patrick Culliton scored on the power play goal with only 18 seconds left in the period. Lehigh scored two consecutive power play goals to open the scoring in the third period but Freshman sensation Mitch Pulver tied the game less than a minute later on an even strength goal. The rest of the third period saw plenty of action but no goals as the game went to overtime. In the five minute overtime four-on-four overtime, Chandler Brewer skated into the zone and took a shot that beat Lehigh goaltender Colin Vorhies and sent the crowd into euphoria. Freshman goaltender Jameson Marshall had a tremendous night with 25 saves on 27 Lehigh shots. The Midshipmen (now 6-3-1 overall) are back in action tomorrow night against the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks at 7:30 PM. By: Jim
2008-10-15 -- 9:26 am Navy Falls to #10 Kent State 7-6 KENT , OH (Sunday, October 12, 2008) – In a great high-scoring, back-and-forth Sunday afternoon affair, #25 Navy (now 5-3-1 overall) lost to #10 Kent State (now 3-2-0 overall) by only one goal. The game featured all four goaltenders and great college hockey action. Navy opened the scoring on a Mitch Pulver goal just four minutes into the game. Kent State responded four and a half minutes later but Mitch Pulver quickly answered with his second goal of the game. To close out the first period, Navy’s Charlie Daniel netted a power play goal and Kent State was able to poke in a puck past goaltender Jeremey Estevez with 11 seconds on the clock. The second period was the difference in the game as Kent scored three goals in a span of two minutes to take a 5 to 3 lead. The back-and-forth battle would not end here, as Senior Jon Westerman scored a power play goal to bring Navy within one, but Kent State regained their two goal lead on a 3-on-3 goal with four minutes left in the period. Matt Swezey closed out the period with a power play goal that brought Navy back to within one goal. In the third period, Charlie Daniel tied the game but Kent State would get the game winner on a power play goal with 5:30 showing on the clock. Junior goaltender Eric Anderson relieved Jeremey Estevez in the second period. Unfortunately, the scorekeeper for Kent State did not keep track of their saves. At the end of the game, Navy’s head Coach Mike Fox was mostly pleased with his team’s effort. He pointed out that both Navy and Kent State beat John Carroll by the same score and that Navy only lost by one goal to the number 10 team in the ACHA. This game along with their season proves that Navy has become one of the elite teams in the ACHA. The Midshipmen are back in action at home this weekend against the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks on Friday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 7:30 PM. By: Jim
