ZooLights at the National Zoo in Washington, DC is a winter holiday event that is sure to be fun for the whole family. The National Zoo presents a display of thousands of sparkling lights featuring sculptures of many of the Zoo's most popular animals, including giant pandas, Asian elephants, gibbons, a sea lion, an octopus, and a Komodo dragon. Visitors at ZooLights will enjoy winter-themed crafts, ice sculpting demonstrations, choral groups, and storytellers.

The Washington, DC Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Temple, is open to all during the Christmas season. This impressive church and its surrounding grounds shine brightly with more than 450,000 sparkling Christmas lights. Each night, a different local musical group performs a live concert in a state-of-the-art theater. All events are free! Visitors are welcome to explore the Washington, DC Mormon Temple grounds and the Visitors' Center and see a live outdoor nativity scene, an indoor exhibit of international nativity scenes and a selection of Christmas films.

Dusk to 10 p.m. nightly. Nativity scene is open each evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Live musical performances begin at 7 and 8 p.m.

FEATURED Lights on the Bay   Show/Hide details
Anne Arundel Medical Center's annual holiday light show, "Lights on the Bay," will open to the public Nov. 21 and continue through Jan. 4, 2009 at Sandy Point State Park, 1100 E. College Parkway. The show features almost 70 animated and stationary displays, three lighted tunnels, and perimeter and architectural lighting along a two mile drive through the park. A number of displays are unique to the area, such as the Colonial Village modeled after historic Annapolis and the display of Midshipman tossing their hats in the air. This year the show has two new lighting themes: a North Pole Penguin Village and an Under the Sea Adventure. Each night children can participate in a scavenger hunt by looking for items in the show and answering display-related questions. A drawing for prizes will be held, and 3-D glasses can be purchased for $3 to view some displays in three dimensions. Admission is $14 per car, $28 per minibus or trolley, and $50 for a coach bus. Coupons, available at Graul's Markets, Anne Arundel County Public Libraries, and in the Annapolis Pennysaver, offer a $4 discount on weekdays. All proceeds benefit the medical center. The Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center Inc. and the Northern Arundel Cultural Preservation Society Inc. will present a multi-media exhibition, "Trails, Tracks, Tarmac: Lives of African-Americans in the History and Culture of Northern Anne Arundel County, 1850 to the Present" from Sept. 2008 to Sept. 2009 at the Bates Legacy Center, 1101 Smithville St. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and by appointment on Sundays. This exhibition traces the history of African-American contributions and collections that proved influential to the development of Northern Anne Arundel County. A one day motor coach trip to the Pennsylvania Christmas and Gift show is planned for Dec. 3 in Harrisburg, Pa. The bus departs Centreville Senior Center at 7:30 a.m., Grasonville Senior Center at 8 a.m., and Kent Island Senior Center at 8:30 a.m. The return trip departs at 5 p.m. with a stop for dinner. The show is indoors, on one floor, and offers specialty shops, decorated trees, a train display, choral and musical groups, a Christmas marionette show, dance troupes, and Santa. The lighting of the National Christmas Tree is the beginning of a three week Washington, DC Christmas tradition. Nationally known entertainers and a military band perform and the President brings a message of peace to the nation and the world.

Tickets: The National Park Service distributes free tickets on a first-come first served basis, on Saturday, November 1, 2008, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion near the corner of 15th and E Streets, NW, just southeast of the White House grounds. A maximum of four tickets are issued per person. Tickets are required for every attendee, including children.

Parking Near the National Christmas Tree Parking is extremely limited near the National Christmas Tree. Limited parking is available along Constitution Avenue between 15th and 17th Streets after 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day on weekends. The best way to get to the area is by metro. The closest stops are Metro Center, Federal Triangle, and McPherson Square. Read more about parking near the National Mall

Holly Trolley rides to Lights on the Bay will be offered at 7 and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 6 and 8 p.m. Sundays from Dec. 5 to Dec. 28. Trolley riders can park at the Doubletree Hotel off Riva Road, 210 Holiday Court and enjoy a hot beverage and Doubletree chocolate chip cookie before taking the trolley ride to the light show at Sandy Point Park. Riders should allow about one hour from departure to return. Note that on some Fridays and Saturdays there can be a significant wait at the entrance to the show, especially the weekend before Christmas Day. Tickets cost $11.50 for all ages and no charge for infants and toddlers sitting in laps. The ticket price includes admission to the light show. Reservations are required. Also featured will be a display of about a dozen Paul's Puppets and marionettes from a well loved local puppet troupe run by a Linthicum MD couple from the 1930's to the 1960's. Hopkinson Smith has been focused since the mid-80's almost exclusively on the solo repertoires for early plucked instruments. He has since produced a series of prize-winning recordings for Astr'e, featuring Spanish music for vihuela and baroque guitar, French lute music of the Renaissance and baroque, early 17th century Italian music and the German high baroque. A music graduate of Harvard University, Smith studied with Emilio Pujol in Catalonia and Eugen Dombois in Switzerland and subsequently became involved in numerous chamber music projects including the founding of the ensemble Hesperion XX.
