BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore Gas and Electric Company says more than 3,000 customers in Baltimore and Westminster are participating in a pilot program aimed at helping them better manage energy usage.
The smart meters AMI pilot runs from July to November 2008 and will test two-way communication via secure radio frequency between the customer's meter and a meter data management system
BGE officials say since energy usage is tracked hourly, customers will get more energy management options. They say customers will be able to participate in programs that offer lower electric rates during off-peak hours and Internet access to their daily energy usage information.
BGE hopes to start using the program system-wide next year. Meter installations should be completed by 2012.
