Annapolis residents Allan and Katie Terhune captured the Flying Scot North American Championship in impressive fashion last week.
Terhune, a North Sails professional who works out of the Chesapeake loft in Eastport, won three of six races to compile a low score of 17 points - 17 better than runner-up David Neff of Selby Bay in Edgewater. Scott Mauney of Dallas, Texas placed third in the 69-boat fleet.
It was the first North American crown for Terhune, who was runner-up in 2001 to fellow North Sails pro and Arnold resident Greg Fisher.
"Katie and I spent a lot of time practicing so our boat-handling was very good," Terhune said.
North Sails introduced a redesigned mainsail for the Flying Scot this year and Terhune felt that made a difference in terms of boat speed.
"I think the new main makes the boat more balanced," said Terhune, who worked with Fisher to design the sail.
Competition was held out of Toms River Yacht Club, for which Terhune competed as a junior sailor. He would later become an All-American at the United States Merchant Marine Academy before moving to Annapolis to coach at the Naval Academy.
Terhune also owns a North American championship in Lightning class and a pair of US Sailing national championships. He captured the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Double-handed National Championship while at Kings Point.
Terhune, sailing with his wife and D.C. resident Meg Muller, was runner-up in the Lightning Atlantic Coast Championship, held this past weekend out of Rock Hall Yacht Club. The Eastport Yacht Club trio notched a second and a pair of thirds in five races in totaling 19 points - seven behind the Buffalo Canoe Club entry skippered by class veteran David Starck.
Annapolis resident Geoff Becker, intercollegiate sailing coach at Washington College, placed third with 25 points. Dan Rabin and John Loe crewed for Becker, a Severn Sailing Association member.
