Va. trust dissolves, gives money to bay foundation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A nonprofit land trust is shutting down and donating $550,000 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for its programs in Virginia.

The funding is the Chesterfield Conservancy's remaining money.

Trustee Dan Gecker says the conservancy was established in 2006 in response to rapid development in Chesterfield County. The conservancy's mission was to promote the conservation, protection, and prudent use of the area's open space and natural resources.

Ann Jennings, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Virginia executive director, says the conservancy's donation is critical to her group's efforts in Virginia to restore the water quality of the bay and its tributaries.

Repairman dies on the job at Chesapeake College

WYE MILLS, Md. (AP) — Authorities in Queen Anne's County say a worker was killed while repairing an overhead light in a building at Chesapeake College.

The sheriff's office says it appears 33-year-old Troy Smith of Federalsburg was electrocuted.

The incident was reported shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators say staff and paramedics used CPR but were unable to revive Smith.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health agency is investigating the death.

Suspect arrested in Edgewood homicide

BEL AIR, Md. (AP) — The Harford County Sheriff's Office says the suspect in a fatal shooting in Edgewood has been arrested in Pinewood, S.C.

Authorities say 29-year-old Gary Davenport was arrested without incident at the home of a relative Wednesday.

Davenport is wanted in Maryland on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Taurean Williams and the wounding of Williams' 20-year-old brother, Timothy, on June 14.

The shootings happened in the 1600 block of Candlewood Drive.

The sheriff's office says Davenport has waived extradition.

Senator seeks funds for Mount Airy generators

MOUNT AIRY, Md. (AP) — U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin says he is working on getting federal grant money to cover the cost of two generators for the town of Mount Airy.

The generators would be used if the town's electrical system is knocked out, which occurred during last September's downtown fire.

Mayor Frank Johnson says the Town Hall was without electricity in the aftermath of the fire, complicating emergency operations.

During a visit Tuesday, Cardin met with town officials and business owners affected by the fire.
