The Green Hornets 14U select softball team placed third in the ASA State Championship Tournament, which earned them a berth in the ASA Eastern Regional Nationals held last weekend in Sterling, Va.
The Hornets, coached by Doug Hofstedt, Tom Palarino and Mark Taylor, played exceptionally well at the Nationals, posting a 3-2 record.
The Hornets won 6-3 against the Central Pennsylvania Explosion; edged the New York Miss Shen Magic 6-5, and bested Pennsylvania's Lanape Valley Fury 6-3.
The Hornets' ASA Nationals ended in the quarter-final round with two extremely well-played, one-run games. They lost to the Christmas City (Pa.) Crush 2-1, and then to the Central Pennsylvania Explosion 4-3.
Even in defeat, the Hornets played incredible softball, and the coaches want to thank all players and parents for a great nationals.
Lindsay Palarino batted .600 at nationals including four doubles and three triples. Dallas Floer batted .400 with a double and two triples. Lauren Timlin and Lindsay Palarino led the team with five RBIs each.
Pitchers Lindsay Palarino (four complete games) and Sarah Taylor (one complete game) kept batters off-balance throughout the five-day event.
During the team's regular season, the Hornets played 50 games. Lindsay Palarino (.512) led in batting averages for team during the season followed by Dallas Floer (.411); Gabby Eckstein (.402); Clare Hofstedt (.333); Morgan Strennen (.330); and Lauren Timlin (.321).
Morgan Strennen led the team with 30 RBIs this season followed by Lindsay Palarino with 29 and Dallas Floer with 22.
Amanda Domm, Erica Henkel, Janie Thrift, Megan Woods and Morgan Rosser also contributed to the team's great season. Congratulations to all.
The Green Hornets 14U fast-pitch softball team will be moving to 16U for the 2009 season.
The initial tryout will be held Friday at 6 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tryouts will be held both days at Kinder Farm Park field No. 2.

Starting with the upcoming season, the Green Hornets' baseball program will conduct select travel team tryouts in late summer or early fall instead of the spring as has been done in the past. Tryouts for the 2009 spring select teams for ages 11, 12, 13 and 14, are scheduled for August and early September at Kinder Park Farm.

Ripken 2009 Tournament Team tryouts will be conducted separately in either late October or early March.
